The Tsinghua News Center, based on online voting and experts' ratings, announced 2009's Top Ten Tsinghua News Stories. The following list is organized in chronological order of events as they were reported:
1. Professor Hu Heping was appointed as Party Secretary of Tsinghua University by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Professor Chen Xi no longer serves as Party Secretary of Tsinghua. The decision was announced at a meeting held at Tsinghua on January 5th, 2009. | |
2. Twenty-three Tsinghua research achievements won 2008 State Science and Technology Awards, ranking first among Chinese universities. The award ceremony was held January 9th in the Great Hall of the People. Of Tsinghua's 23 awards, five were State Natural Science Awards, six were State Technological Invention Awards, and twelve were State Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. | |
3. Important discoveries were made in research on the Tsinghua Bamboo strips. The Center for Excavated Texts Research and Protection (CETRP) announced in April that there are altogether 2,388 bamboo strips (including a small number of fragments) collected at Tsinghua. Researchers said they have found some invaluable texts from the strips such as Bao Xun --the last words of King Wen of the Zhou Dynasty to his son, and some other important contents. | |
4. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Tsinghua University on May 3rd to celebrate Youth Day with faculty members and students. He first visited the Tsinghua University Network Research Center, which directs the construction, operation and management of the CNGI-CERNET2/6IX, the backbone network of the China Next-Generation Internet (CNGI), and the Center for Excavated Texts Research and Preservation at Tsinghua. The Premier later spoke with Tsinghua students. |

5. The "Tsinghua Xuetang Plan" for promoting the cultivation of innovative talent among undergraduate students was launched in June. |

6. Tsinghua University officially unveiled the logo of its Centenary Celebration on September 17th. The Logo merges the shape of the Tsinghua Auditorium with the Arabic numeral "100". On the logo, one can also see the Arabic numerals "1911-2011", which indicate the 100-year history of Tsinghua. The logo shows both the deep historical legacy and the rich humanistic spirit of Tsinghua while highlighting the centenary celebration. Tsinghua also started the construction of a number of new buildings for the Centenary Celebration. |

7. Tsinghua opened the School of Life Sciences (SLS) based on the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology on September 28th. Tsinghua Professor Shi Yigong became the first director of the SLS. Tsinghua reopened the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Learning on November 1st. Professor Chen Lai, a leading scholar of Chinese philosophy, is the first dean of the Academy. The Institute of Education was inaugurated on November 6th. Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe became its first director. The Tsinghua Mathematical Sciences Center (MSC) opened on December 17th. The Fields Medal winner Professor Shing-tung Yau became the first director of the new center. |

8. Tsinghua faculty members and students celebrated the National Day in various ways. More than 5,100 participated in the celebrations in Beijing's Tian'anmen area on National Day. |

9. Tsinghua University, the University of Cambridge, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) formed a Low Carbon Energy University Alliance (LCEUA) to develop new technology and policy options for the global low carbon economy on November 15th. Former Vice Premier of China Zeng Peiyan inaugurated the alliance. The LCEUA will provide a platform for science and technology exchange and education cooperation and be committed for dealing with climate change and promoting low carbon economic development. | |
10. Four members of the Tsinghua faculty have been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Two professors were honored with the "Renowned Teacher of the Nation" award, and 23 were chosen in the Ministry of Education's Cheung Kong Scholars Award Plan. In addition, eight Tsinghua alumni were elected to CAS and CAE. |
