The Tenth WMO Symposium on Education and Training to be held in Nanjing

The Tenth WMO Symposium on Education and Training (SYMET-X) will be held from 18 to 23 September 2006 in Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. Secretary-General of WMO and some Ministers or Administrators from Chinese Government will be present at the Symposium, which will be attended by more than 100 meteorological administrators, educational experts, professors, directors of WMO RMTCs, and instructors from training units of NMHSs from over 100 countries and regions, and over 100 domestic experts in the field as well.

The underlying theme of SYMET-X is meteorological and hydrological education and training for disaster prevention and mitigation. The objective is to stimulate and facilitate the development of a culture of disaster prevention and mitigation within the meteorological and hydrological community worldwide.

The ultimate aim is to assist the society in its efforts to protect life and reduce property damage from natural and human-induced disasters, and enhance social and economic development. The Symposium will also promote exchange and cooperation among china and foreign countries in terms of meteorological science and technology as well as the theory and practice of disaster prevention and mitigation within the meteorological and hydrological community in China .

It is the first time to hold WMO Symposium on Education and Training in East Asia . SYMET-X will be conducted in one of the following languages: English, French, Russian, or Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation in the other three languages.

Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), as the holding party of the Symposium, enjoys high reputation for meteorological education worldwide. NUIST, renamed from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, has undertaken education and training on meteorology for nearly 50 years. It has made great achievements in the field of international academic exchange, cooperative program, and international education and training on meteorology and made great contribution to that.

WMO RMTC Nanjing, located on the campus of NUIST and recognized as one of the five most active RMTCs, has held 25 international training courses and 9 bilateral training courses. 585 trainees from 94 countries and regions have received training at RMTC Nanjing, which have become senior meteorological experts and administrators.

Former and present Secretary-General of WMO and other WMO officers have highly appreciated the teaching quality of NUIST.
