GUO Yuting, one SCUT graduate who has undertaken voluntary service for one year in Seychelles, Africa, returned to Guangzhou on February 16 with the deep friendship between the two peoples.
Used to study piano music performance in School of Arts, GUO has been always active in volunteer services. In 2008, she applied for the volunteer program of aiding Seychelles and was admitted to be a volunteer piano teacher soon after authoritative examination. During the whole year there, GUO has taught more than 50 students.
As a music school teacher, she has taken part in seven important performances including the Creole Music Festival and the African Music Festival. When working at the Seychelles National Choir, she has cooperated with the English Baroque music experts and held a special concert.
Before returning to China, at the bid farewell concert, GUO's excellent music performance was highly approved by the Seychelles ministers and friends from all walks of life. In the eyes of Seychelles people, she has become the new "China's volunteer star".
When talking about the experience of the past year, the youngest team volunteer said: "I have learnt a lot during this year. On the one hand, my English and cooking skills have been greatly improved; on the other, I have learned how to cooperate with the other team members. I feel that I have grown up, and that I have gained much more than I have paid!"
It is said that the group of Guangzhou volunteers consisted of 12 members, all selected by the Guangzhou municipal committee of the Youth League. They left for Seychelles last March to carry out a one-year voluntary service program, covering health care, music education, Chinese education, sports teaching, etc.. Seychelles President James Michel spoke highly of the Chinese volunteers and regarded them as the outstanding representatives of the Chinese youth, the civil messengers and the friendship bridge between the two countries.
