Comrade GUO Xinqian, a Party member who retired from the School of Civil and Transportation Engineering, failing to respond to medical treatment, passed away on Feb. 14, 2009 in General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command. On March 18, SCUT held a memorial rite for Comrade Guo.
Comrade GUO Xinqian was born in 1923 in Xun County, Henan Province. After graduation from Nanjing University (the former Central University) in 1950, Guo joined the Air Force of People's Liberation Army and became a member of Communist Party of China in 1965. In 1976 he began working in SCUT after his demobilization from the army. He is an associate professor and served as deputy director of the former Shipbuilding Department. Later in 1986, he retired from his work. When serving SCUT, Guo devoted himself to education and was titled "Excellent Member of CPC" and "Advanced Worker" many times. As a member of the University's Work Committee of Caring about the Next Generation (WCCNG), he dedicated his life to the care of the next generation. Guo led a plain life but was generous to students in difficulty. In recent years, he has sponsored over 30 people with a total amount of 50,000 yuan and contributed a lot of clothes and other daily necessities. His exemplary deeds were reported by the provincial media, including Nanfang Daily, Guangzhou Daily, Goat City Evening Paper and so on. In October 2007, SCUT Party Committee called on the whole University to learn from Comrade GUO Xinqian.
