On July 1, International Symposium on Frontiers of Earth Sciences 2010 annual meeting of International Professionals for the Advancement of Chinese Earth Sciences was held at Zhejiang University. The two-day conference will mainly focus on the following topics, namely Deep-Sea Multi-Disciplinary Research of Mid-Ocean Ridges and Subduction Zones and Cutting-Edge Technologies, Hydrogeochemical Processes and Reactive Transport in Subsurface and Aquatic Environments, The Earth's Structure and its Thermal and Mineralogical Variations, The Impact of Large Rivers on Carbon Cycling and Microbial Processes in Marginal Seas. At least 150 experts attend the meeting, including more than 20 outstanding overseas Chinese earth scientists.
On the morning of July 1, Academician Deng Qidong made a report entitled "Kunlun Wenchuan earthquake series and Bayan Kara Block's latest activities". In his report, Prof. Deng advocated that Kunlun Earthquake in 2001, Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 and Yushu Earthquake this year all have intimate relationship with Bayan Kara Block and most quakes occur along strike-slip fault.
The Symposium is co-organized by International Professionals for the Advancement of Chinese Earth Sciences (IPACES), Zhejiang University and State Oceanic Administration.
International Professionals for the Advancement of Chinese Earth Sciences (IPACES) is a non-profit academic organization composed of distinguished overseas Chinese scientists. It was established in 1999 to promote cooperation in earth sciences between China and other countries and to advance earth sciences research and education in China.
