After a testing fase of a month a new railway container terminal came into operation in Chengdu, China. By improving the infrastructure the government hope to facilitate transport of goods to the ports and to make removal of factories to the west more attractive.
The newly opened railway container terminal in Chengdu is linked to 55 railway terminals in China, amongst which are Guangzhou and Beijing. Furthermore work is under way to renovate the nearest highways to connect the terminal to the freeway Chengdu-Nanchong. To reach a more efficient result in the logistic process a distribution facility is still being built next to the terminal.

Capacity

Spread over 143HA the 8,4 km long and 850 m wide container terminal has cost 759 million yuan (more than 110 million dollar). Presently the capacity is estimated at 8,4 million tons. It is expected that 13,7 million tons will be reached in the future with a final aim at 26,3 million tons. Chengdu registered more than 30 million tons of freight traffic during 2009, more than any other town in western China.

Trend
According to Arie Schreier, COO of PTL Group, the building of the freight terminal in Chengdu is part of the trend to move the main area of production in the coastal regions of China to the west. "This trend is also noticeable in the process of the Chinese government stimulating companies, by on the one hand offering lower taxes, to move to the west, with on the other hand higher taxes for companies desiring to establish themselves in the coastal areas." PTL Group assist multinational companies in trading efficiently and without problems in China.
