The answer would be that mankind's food supply would drop. But now lazy farmer's can catch a much-needed break thanks to ratooning rice.
Maguan Town is a little agriculture-based town in Chongqing City, and the tracts of golden farmlands shine during the harvest season. But if you look around carefully, you will find smaller pieces of green are hiding among the gold. It is just some rice just after it has started to head, and it can be harvested half a month later. People in the know will recognize it as ratooning rice, which is usually called "lazy farmer's rice" by people here, and it has been approved by national patent.
The "lazy farmer's rice" at Maguan Town is the only of its kind in all of China, even the whole world, and the two oldest trunks of rice have lived for 28 years.
The special rice was developed by an ordinary villager named Hu Daishu. During the spring 28 years ago, Hu found a piece of weird wild rice on a mountain, and he dug four pieces of them to cultivate in his house. In the following years, he kept trying to create a hybrid form of rice by combining this special kind and various kinds of rice to give birth to a new kind of rice that could go through winter.
In 1989, he finally succeeded and he named the new rice "89-1." The next year, he planted those new seeds in his farmland and harvested 550 kilograms of rice every acre. It was a miracle.
In 2000, the State Intellectual Property Office approved Hu's invention and issued him the letter of patent officially.
