China Working To Raise Agricultural Self-Sufficiency

Write: Septima [2011-05-20]
In an effort that could limit import growth, the government of China is working on a proposal to raise the country's agricultural products self-sufficiency level for vegetable oils, cotton and sugar over the next five years.
China's ministry of Agriculture has announced that the country would try to raise its self-sufficiency rate for vegetable oils beyond the 40% level, the government's threshold for national food security, between 2011 and 2015 while boosting output of oilseeds to 35 million MT while the government is targeting annual cotton output of more than 7 million MT during China's 12th Five-Year Program period, compared with about 6.2 million MT this year, which was down 180,000 MT from 2009.
Meanwhile the government of China has already allocated a larger share of its fixed-asset investment budget to rural infrastructure following the conclusion of its annual Central Rural Work Conference.
