Nearly 70% of Chinese Consumers Do Not Trust Food Safety

Food safety is a major concern among almost 70 percent of Chinese consumers according to a nationwide survey that covered 24 food categories including vegetables, bottled water, cooking oil and seafood.
The "2010-2011 Consumer Food Confidence Report" released by Insight China Magazine and Tsinghua Media Survey Lab found street food cooked meats pickled vegetables and dairy products topped the list of questionable foods.
Respondents also reported anxieties over meat from sick animals and the liberal use of pesticides, perservatives and toxic chemicals including melamine.
Additionally most were concerned about lax safety standards and weak government regulation.
