Last week the authorization to start the harvesting of Williams pear was given, marking the starting point for the formal harvest - Williams is the biggest variety and extends through the whole region.
For this season the prognoses is a growth of almost 24% in the production of pears and apples regarding last season.
According to the last report, made by the Fruit Cultivation Secretary from the province, of the Williams variety a harvesting of 307,541 tons in Rio NEgro and 29,013 in Neuqun is expected, giving 17,7% more than last season; and from Packham's Triumph, the second most important variety, it is expected more than 288, 000 tons in Rio Negro and Neuqun, almost 29% more than in the last season.
The total pear harvest is estimated is at 713,961 tons for the whole region.
According to information from the experimental station of INTA, "this year the fruit has a better size than last season". And also a bigger grade of firmness in the fruit, so a better quality is expected.
