The UK apple market is not as strong as normal for this time of year, before Christmas it was relatively buoyant. The most popular varieties at the moment seem to be bi-coloured varieties such as Gala. Traditionally Golden Delicious has been the popular variety in the UK, but this season it has taken a back foot being overtaken in both the retail and catering sectors by varieties such as Gala and Pink Kiss.Furthermore, other traditional varieties such as Granny smith have had quality issues with scald forming when only a few days out of storage, this is not encouraging retailers to stock it. This problem is not unknown but it is exceptionally early this season normally it is not seen until the end of January or even February.
