Australian consumers may have seen the last of the Chinese apple imports for 2011. The apple export season in China is wrapping up, and no more imports are expected until October at the earliest. The apples have been retailing in Australia for less than a fortnight, and have been the focus of extensive media coverage.
Apple industry leader Darral Ashton says they have not performed well. "My understanding is that the fruit originally started off priced at the same as Australian fruit, but was readily discounted and the bulk of it ended up appearing at Paddy's Market," he said. "I don't think it could be called a roaring success."
