On the morning of November 15th,2010, President Su Zhiwu met with Professor De Roure, a computer science expert coming from Oxford University.
President Su Zhiwu showed a warm welcome to Professor De Roure s visit and spoke highly of his prominent achievement in the field of computer science research. President Su Zhiwu pointed out that as China is changing from traditional media to modern digital media, the rapid development of the media industry and technology are equally important. Therefore, CUC needed to explore new development model and necessary scientific and technological means continuously in areas of strength such as news media, visual arts and information and communication. In view of the achievement acquired by Professor De Roure in fields of distributed information systems, distributed programming languages and the Semantic Web, CUC would like to invite him as a Changjiang Scholar for computer science in the hope that he would make a contribution to the development of computer science of CUC with his academic expertise and resources and for the communication and cooperation between CUC and Oxford University as well. At the same time, President Su Zhiwu expressed that CUC would provide necessary support for Professor De Roure s work at CUC in the future.
Professor De Roure said that it was a good chance to visit CUC and with great honor to be invited as one of Changjiang Scholars. He hoped to be one member of CUC soon and played a role in disciplines and research development, teacher and student exchange with his expertise.
After the meeting, Professor De Roure paid visits to School Of Animation, New Media Institute and CUC TV Station and had detailed negotiations about cooperation with School Of Computer.
President Assistant Liu Liqun; Director of Science and Technology Department Che Qing; Director of Human Resource Department Wang Hui; Dean of School Of Computer Wang Yongbin, Deputy Dean Huang Xianglin; Deputy Director of International Exchange and Cooperation Department Liang Yan attended the meeting.
Professor De Roure is a well-known professor of Department of Engineering Science of Oxford University and the project leader of UK national e-science strategy. He has profound knowledge in areas of digital technology research methods in multi-discipline.
Department of Engineering Science of Oxford University is not only the research center of computer science, data analysis, computational biology, computational quantum theory, computational linguistics and information systems, but also in charge of teaching and basic research related to computer science as well as interdisciplinary collaborative research in Oxford University. Meanwhile, because of their attention paid on the combination of theory and practice, many corporations cooperate closely with them. Department of Engineering Science of Oxford University has great resources of teachers including 35 professors of authority.
