On the morning of Sept. 10th, the opening ceremony of 2010 Freshmen Military Training was held at the stadium. Present at the ceremony were Gui Hongmin, Commander of 73022 PLA Troop local schools military training division, Qi Ding, Commander of 73022 PLA Troop local schools military training regiment, ZSTU President Qiu Songliang, ZSTU Assistant Secretary Jin Jinru, ZSTU vice-President Dai Wenzhan, Chen Jianyong, Shen Manhong, Chen Wenxing, and Li Fei, member of ZSTU CPC committee and Secretary of the ZSTU Commission for Discipline Inspection, Zhu Gendi, president assistant and Party Secretary of College of Science and Arts, Lu Aihua, president assistant, member of ZSTU CPC committee and Chief of President Office, and principals from the related function units and faculties. Assistant Secretary Cheng Gang presided over the ceremony.

The opening ceremony began with the stately National Anthem. Over 4300 trainees in camouflage uniforms lined up in front of the rostrum, high-spirited and vigorous. President Qiu presented the training flag to the regiment.

Gui Hongmin delivered his speech in which he talked about military training as an indispensable class to university students as well as an important political task of the freshmen. He encouraged the trainees to challenge themselves, forge in them strong minds, and conquer hardships and difficulties. And he also hoped that the trainees could uplift the team spirit and wished the training to be secure, harmonious, and successful.

Qiu Songliang made a speech on the ceremony. He, on behalf of the school leaders and the faculty, extended warm welcome to all the drill masters of 73022 troop and expressed sincere thanks to those who had done great preparatory work to the training. At the same time he put forward his requirements on the trainees. First, be qualified politically. Learn from the masters and pass on the good traditions of PLA. Second, be competent militarily. Fear no hardships, fear no tiredness. Third, have a fine style of work. Cultivate in themselves great brevity, tough mind and strict enforcement of orders and prohibitions. Fourth, observe strict disciplines. Abide by disciplines, respect masters, and observe orders. Fifth, ensure safe training. Stress scientific training, combine training with relaxation, and report upon physical discomforts. Lastly, Qiu Songliang expected that the masters would dedicate themselves to imparting good traditions of PLA to the trainees and that ZSTU staff could cooperate harmoniously with the masters to conduct the training.

Trainer representative Liu Lei and trainee representative Shang Xuesen had their floor in turn. Liu Lei said that the trainers would be strict with the trainees and forge strong minds in the trainees. Shang Xuesen promised that the trainees would fear no hardships or tiredness, observe orders and disciplines, and make great achievements in the training.

After the opening ceremony the first training day started.
