Alumni, Professor Chen Jingming was elected the Academician of the Academy of science of the Royal Society of Canada

On 27 June 2006, the alumni of our university, one of the World famous experts on Remote Sensing, Canadian Chief Research Chair, Dean of the Academic Association of ESSI, Chief Professor in the Department of Geography of University of Toronto, Canada, Dr. Chen Jingming, was elected the Academician of the Canadian Royal Science Academy. Here, We would like to extend our sincere congratulation to our alumni Chen Jingming!

The Academy of science of the Royal Society of Canada is one of the most important science associations in Canada. It was founded in 1882 and now it has about 1000 academicians. All of them are the best representatives from the fields of Canadian Nature and Applied Science. It includes all the Nobel Prize Winners of Canadian Scientists. The Academician of the Academy of science of the Royal Society is granted once every year and each time no more 30 scientists are chosen.

The following are his main biographical information:

Professor Chen Jingming graduated from Meteorology major in our university in 1982.

He is now, Full Professor, Department of geography, University of Toronto

2000-2000, Principal Research Scientist, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

1997-2000, Senior Research Scientist, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

1994-2000, Adjunct Professor, University of Ottawa

1996-now, Adjunct Professor, YorkUniversity

1999-now, Adjunct Professor, NanjingUniversity, P.R. China

1993-1997, Research Scientist, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

1991-1993, Research Associate, University of British Columbia (UBC)

1989-1991, Postdoctoral Fellow, UBC

1988-1989, Senior Research Scientist, Beijing Institute of Geography, ChineseAcademy of Sciences

1986-1988, Research Scientist, Beijing Institute of Geography, ChineseAcademy of Sciences

July 1, 2000, Tenure awarded

His most important research: From the Ground up and Atmosphere Down:

Studying the Carbon Cycle and Climate Change. Terrestrial ecosystems are a critical part of the Earth s climate system. As our population grows and places increasing demands on the planet s natural resources, these ecosystems are also the most vulnerable part of the climate system. Evidence suggests that human activities have not only modified atmospheric composition and the Earth s land surface, but also the Earth s climate. Such climate changes are potentially detrimental to our living environment and economy. Given Canada s role as a signatory of Kyoto, there are many new issues that must be addressed by Canadian scientists. One of them involves the interaction between ecosystems and the atmosphere. As the Canada Research Chair in Ecosystem-Atmospheric Interaction, Dr. Chen focuses on carbon cycle processes and how they interact with the atmosphere in both short-term and long-term time frames. An internationally respected scientist with a background in meteorology, Dr. Chen is using a model that considers the interaction between ecosystems and the atmosphere, one that will be better able to quantify carbon stock changes. His research represents a fresh approach for scientists both within and outside Canada. By quantifying the changes in carbon stocks in various ecosystems, it could lead to useful results for predicting the climate in the future and be useful to Kyoto-related policy making. Professor Chen Jingming has published more than 70 SCI papers which have been cited more than 1000 times. One of his papers has been cited for 104 times.

Because of his outstanding contributions to technology transfer, in 1998 & 2001, he was awarded Earth Sciences Sector Merit Award by the Department of Natural Resources, Canada. He was honored with Ontario Premiere's Research Excellence Award, 2001 and Alouette Award, 2000. The award is named after the first Canadian satellite and is one of the highest honors of Canadian Aeronautic and Space Institute given to various disciplines including space technology and science, earth observation, aviation and aerodynamics. In 2005, our State Education Commission invited him as Visiting Professor for Changjiang Academician Award Plan

Professor Chen Jingming returned to our university on 8 May this year and made an academic report for the teachers and students.
