On Feb. 6, the awarding ceremony of "2009 China College Students Self-improvement Star", co-organized by The Central Committee of the Communist Young League and National Union of Students, was held in Beijing. SCUT doctorate candidate CHEN Pingxu was honored pacesetter of "China College Students Self-improvement Star". As the one who received the highest votes, CHEN Pingxu has been studying in tough situation, and devoting himself to research even when suffering from disease. The jury was deeply moved by his spirit of self-improvement. It was reported that there were altogether 800 award nominations of self-improvement star, 100 self-improvement stars and 10 pacesetters of self-improvement star. Chen was the only student of Guangdong province who was honored the pacesetter.
CHEN Pingxu was born in a small village of Henan province, a place where the water and electricity were scarce and transportation service was poor. The impoverished family has made him become independent and stubborn since childhood. During his college years, Chen only spent 200 yuan every month as living expense. The saved money was spent in buying raw material and laboratory facilities to establish his own laboratory. When studying as a postgraduate in SCUT, he was offered more room for development by the advantageous experimental condition. At present, Chen has had over 40 adhesive related patents and technologies, and won several awards, such as gold medal of National Invention Exhibition, first prize of the 11th "Challenge Cup" College Students Contest of Extracurricular Scientific Products, and National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award. Several of his practical technologies have been applied in market and brought good economic benefits.
