BEIJING - Mechanical engineer Zhou Ji was Friday elected president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), one of China's top honorary bodies which advises the government and industry on key scientific and technological issues.
Zhou, 64, who holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo, was elected at the 10th CAE academicians' conference.
He served as education minister from 2003 to 2009.
Five other academicians -- computer applications technologist Pan Yunhe, biotechnologist Xu Rigan, coal chemist Xie Kechang, metallurgist Gan Yong and gastroenterologist Fan Daiming -- were elected vice presidents of the CAE.
As a think tank, the CAE will strive to fulfill its duty to provide advice on scientific and technological issues to assist China transform its mode of economic growth, Zhou said at the conference.
The priority for the CAE is to provide strategic advice to boost China's innovativeness, as well as improving China's academic research and fostering of top-notch specialists, he said.
Established in 1994, the CAE now has 751 member academicians, including 40 females and 36 foreigners.
