Organized by our university, a group of 19 English teachers went to the United States for "English Teaching Theory and Practice " training project in this summer, which ended on September 10. In the 20-day training, the group received training successively in California State University (East Bay), University of Southern California and Rutgers University, and they also visited four well-known U.S. universities. They intensively and systematically studied the theories and practice of English teaching, got a better understanding of American higher education status, esp. the U.S. media education and media development, and campus culture, and obtained first-hand experience of the United States social and cultural diversity.
CUC s English Teachers Accomplished their Professional Training in the US
During the 12-day intensive "English Teaching Theory and Practice" training in California State University (East Bay), the group studied English language teaching (TESOL) Theory and classroom teaching mode through lectures, observation of teaching, exchanges and discussions. Areas explored included US English language teaching, English teaching research, learning strategies, learning needs research, teaching resources and classroom management. The group had heated discussions due to the close connection of the topics with their own teaching experience.
In the training period in Zeya Rutgers University, a professor of Education College delivered a speech entitled "The United States Forefront Theory and Practice of TESOL Teaching", and had thorough exchange with our teachers on English language teaching and research.
Apart from TESOL training, the group were well informed of the United States education in Journalism and Communication, mass media development, media convergence and new media challenges through listening to lectures, visiting campus radio stations and TV stations, and inspecting local media. During their training, the Dean of Communication College Ernest Wilson personally met our teachers. In the nations leading academic scholar Tom Rossensfiel s seminar, Dean Wilson specially introduced our university s English teacher delegation to a large audience present. When they visited School of Journalism in Columbia University, Pulitzer Prize-winning professor Josh Friedman introduced to our teachers the journalism teaching philosophy and teaching operation.
Throughout the training process, our teachers were highly appreciated by the training schools and the instructors for their serious learning attitude, solid language skills, upward team spirit, and positive sense of communication.
