Mr. Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft Corporation and foremost philanthropists, was awarded Tsinghua University Honorary Doctorate on April 19.
The awarding ceremony of the doctorate was held in the main building. Tsinghua President Gu Binglin awarded the diploma to Mr. Gates. Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe hosted the ceremony.
In the past decade, Microsoft and Tsinghua have good cooperation in academic exchange and student training. There is great potential for us to work together in the fields of software engineering and next generation Internet technology, especially the fostering of future leaders for software development, said President Gu at the ceremony.
Mr. Gates later delivered a speech titled The Way Ahead: Innovating Together in China. He emphasized the importance of innovation and cooperation in his speech. Mr. Gates answered several questions from students after the speech.
Prior to the awarding ceremony, Mr. Gates also attended the academic VIP Roundtable Discussion & Dedication Ceremony of Tsinghua University Microsoft Special Pilot CS Class. Professor Andrew Chi-chih Yao, the Turing Award Winner, Tsinghua President Gu Binglin, Tsinghua Vice President Kang Kejun, Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe, and scholars and experts from both Tsinghua and Microsoft exchanged ideas on the development of information science and talent cultivation in the discussion.
