Nobel Prize Winner Craig Mello Delivers Speech

Dr.Craig Mello, the Nobel Prize Winner of 2006 in Physiology or Medicine, delivered a speech entitled Return to The RNA World: Rethinking Gene Expression, Evolution and Medicine at Tsinghua on March 26.

In his one-hour speech held in the Reception Hall, Dr.Mello, 47, talked about factors that could lead to success in research and introduced recent development in RNA research.

After the speech, Dr. Mello answered questions raised by the students. Professor Marcie Williams, Senior Vice President of the University of Massachusetts (UMASS), accompanied on the visit.

Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe had a talk with Dr. Mello after the speech, exchanging ideas on research and disciplines development. Dr. Mello also visited several labs of Tsinghua during his visit.

Dr. Mello received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1990. He joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1994 where he is currently the Blais Professor of Molecular Medicine and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. Dr.Craig Mello and Dr. Andrew Fire of Stanford University were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of RNA interference-gene silencing by double-stranded RNA in 2006.
