Great changes occurred during the past seventy years, and music was as life; and the torch was handed down during the ten decades, and the achievements were splendid. On September 22, 2008, Yan an University will be holding the celebration for her seventieth anniversary. We hereby express our heartfelt thanks to you, and we honor you sincerely, our leaders at all levels, our friends from all walks of life, and our friends at home and abroad, who have been concerned with and supported our university s construction and development.
Yan an University was founded during the war against Japan for saving China, and was the first comprehensive university established by the Communist Party of China, formed by incorporating eight colleges, including the well-known Northern Shaanxi Public School, the Girls University of China, the Zedong Youth Cadre School, the Yan an Lu Xun College of Arts and Literature, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Ethnic College, the New letter Cadre School, and the College of Public Administration one by one, with Wu Yuzhang as the first president. History of Yan an University can be traced back to 1937. By bow, Yan an University has developed into a university jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and Shaanxi Province, with a set of disciplines covering extensive fields in literature, arts, sciences, administration, medicine, education, economics, law, history, and agriculture, and with four campuses, fourteen colleges, three affiliated hospitals, and one independent college, recruiting students from allover China for bachelor s and master s programs at various levels.
During the past seventy years, Party and state leaders of several generations made much account of and showed loving care for the construction and development of this university. While the university was being founded, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of CPC held meeting twice, discussing the establishment of Yan an University. Mao Zedong chose the name for the university personally, and visited the university many times, participating in the inauguration ceremony and giving speeches. After foundation of the new China, in his busy time, Zhou Enlai once made comment, Expand and run YAU well; Deng Xiaoping reveived YAU teachers and students in person; in 1998, Jiang Zemin and Li Peng inscribed for the sixtieth anniversary of YAU; in 2004, General Secretary Hu Jintao wrote autographically that the related departments should jointly support and run Yan an University well. The spring spreads morality and kindness, and all living things produce radiance. The kind solicitude of the central leaders turns into strong resolution and powerful motivation of the faculty and students of YAU for running the university well and serving the former revolutionary base better.
Since her foundation, Yan an University has been feeling with and casting her lot with the nation and the people all the time, receiving commands from her motto of devote oneself to the public and study for practical utility, persevering with education by Yan an spirit, and has produced over one hundred thousand professionals and technicians in all categories and at all levels. During the war times, the university produced a generation of national elites and backbones of the country, and made special contribution to the national independence and construction of the new China, and therefore enjoyed a special position in the history of Chinese higher education; over thirty Party and state leaders, including Li Peng, Ye Xuanping and Buhe, sixteen academicians of the Academia Sinica and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including Wu Heng and Peng Shilu, and over 300 leaders above provincial and ministerial levels, as well as a large number of masters in literature, arts, education, and science have studied or worked here. During the new period, the university has produced a large number of dedicated talents with high caliber and strong ability, who are willing to go down to the grassroots working units, stay here, and are serviceable , and has produced main forces and backbones for the construction of western China, especially the former revolutionary bases in northern Shaanxi, and has made new and special contribution.
At the foot of Yangjia Ridge, and on the shore of Yan River, the lofty institution of higher learning is spending her seventieth anniversary.
The seventieth anniversary is a milestone and new starting point for reviewing experience, exhibiting teaching achievements, gathering the strength of alumni and all walks of life in order to inherit the past and usher in the future, working with passion to be strong, and achieving splendid accomplishment again. At the present, all the preparatory work for the anniversary celebration is being done orderly. We kindly invite, and are ardently looking forward to seeing our alumni, leaders at all levels and friends from all walks of life at the anniversary celebration of YAU, enjoying the great affair and discussing the glorious future!
