Attention in Cancun Climate Conference
Bamboo has strong ability of carbon fixation and plays an important role in mitigating climate change with short-rotation and good economic returns. The experience of bamboo forest management is worth to popularize to the world, especially to the developing countries. A few days ago, just when participants were worried whether United Nation Climate Change Conference could attain the results expected, a report of Functions of Bamboo Forest in Mitigating Climate Change that submitted by International Network for Bamboo and Rattan attracted attention of experts and scholars from all over the world in the United Nation Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico.
The research results were the first to demonstrate that bamboo forest with wind-prevention and sand-fixation not only offered livelihood for human beings and provided shelter for wildlife, but also got environmental services in mitigating climate change. Previously, the world s climate change had been giving rise to the broadly and highly concerning throughout the international society; nearly every country in the world was making kinds of efforts and doing related research to mitigate climate change; functions of forest in mitigating climate change had become everybody s consensus, while related research on bamboo forest has just begun.
With the continuous development of society and rising concern on climate change of human beings, the important position and functions of bamboo are getting more concern and acceptance. Zhou Guomo said, the report focused on similarities and differences between bamboo and other fast growing species in the ability of carbon sink; as was realized that research on bamboo forest carbon sink still needed deepening and widening, it certified huge potential of bamboo forest for coping with challenges of climate change as well as functions of bamboo forest in providing global carbon sink service and mitigating climate change.
The report also suggested that carbon storage of mature bamboo forest was not less than that of other species, and the yearly net carbon sequestration was constant and invariable because of its regenerative properties after selective cutting. Besides, about 2/3 of aboveground part and the whole underground part were left for carbon storage over a longer period after bamboo forest was cut down.
It s thus clear that bamboo forest has got huge carbon storage and our domestic carbon storage of bamboo forest is expected to further increase with continued implementation of planting plans and escalation of areas of bamboo forest.
