It begins with the majestic National Anthem and is chaired by Vice President Wang Runxiao and attended by Chairman of Board of Trustees Chen Xiaozhu Jiang Chengyu, president and dean of Graduate School, Vice Presidents Zheng Yong'an Weng Zhiqian, Wei Bingbo, Zhang Jun, assistant to the president, and other leaders, members of the Degree Assessment Committee of NPU, some of PhD candidates' supervisors, leaders from all the schools, secretaries for postgraduates and relatives of PhD candidates.
On behalf of NPU leaders and all the faculty and students, President Jiang Chengyu extends his ardent congratulations to the 383 students who have earned their PhD degrees and his heartfelt gratitude to all the supervisors. Looking back on the plentiful achievements obtained by grade after grade of graduates and facing another group of graduates who are about to leave the campus, he speaks his sincere words and earnest wishes that the graduates should keep their motherland in mind and take initiatives to combine the self-value realization with the service for the motherland and the people, developing into the excellent talents with both ability and moral integrity.
The graduates should keep on learning because knowledge is never sufficient until one learns, be diligent and inquisitive and continue to use the state-of-the-art research findings to solve the problems in reality, thus making greater contributions to the country's economic development and social progress.
The graduates should be innovative, aim at international cutting-edge knowledge and strive to find and create something and achieve breakthroughs in some key or significant scientific research areas, thus making new contributions to the cause of building the country into an innovative one.
On behalf of PhD candidate supervisors, Professor Liu Feng from School of Materials Science and Engineering said that what the graduates have achieved here in NPU is not just the completion of their doctoral dissertations but more importantly their command of scientific research method. Through their study in NPU, the graduates have been equipped with the ability to take up scientific research on their own and learned how to think, innovate and pursue truth in an exact way.
He hopes the graduates will remember the valuable experience of study at NPU, look to future and make concerted efforts to build their Alma Mater into a domestically first-class and world-renowned prestigious research university. Luo Jun, representative of PhD degree holders and PhD candidate from School of Mechanical Engineering, affectionately reflects on his study and life on the NPU campus.
It is learned that 39% of the 383 PhD candidates graduating from NPU this year have been assigned their jobs in West China's provinces or administrative regions and that 41% have got their jobs in the sectors of aviation, aerospace, marine engineering, military service or military industry.
