On the afternoon of July 6, WANG Yang, Member of Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC and Guangdong Provincial Party Committee Secretary, paid a visit to SCUT and talked with students and teachers on their social practices during holidays. "Good SCUT students! Good Guangdong college students!" Wang highly approved SCUT students' social survey concerning the returned migrant workers. He suggested that young students should integrate their self-improvement with the country's development and work hard to make a brighter future for both themselves and the Chinese people.
During the 2009 winter vocation, over 3,000 SCUT students went down to 28 provinces and municipals for a survey on the returned migrant workers. After days of hard work, they finished a 185,000-word informative collection on Chinese returned migrant workers and mailed one copy to Premier WEN Jiabao. In the Premier's reply, Wen approved their concern and true love for the country, the nation and the Chinese people.
"SCUT impressed me very much. The visit is worthwhile."
SCUT teachers and students were greatly encouraged by Secretary Wang's visit. On the symposium, they heatedly discussed what they have learnt from the practice experience. Wang occasionally interrupted with questions and comments. Some brilliant students were also invited to the talk and introduced their achievements. Wang said: "I'm very glad to talk with you. From you, I find the precious spirit of passion and innovation. The beautiful campus, together with the vigorous teachers and students, impressed me so much. The visit is worthwhile."
"SCUT has four distinctive characteristics."
Wang pointed out that SCUT had four distinctive characteristics in its development. First, SCUT has integrated itself with local social and economic development and has made considerable contributions to Guangdong's progress. Second, the talents it produced are innovative and favored by the society. Third, it actively promotes the integration of production, education and research. Fourth, an active atmosphere has been created on the campus and the cultural development is well done.
Wang hoped that SCUT can stick to the scientific development concept, continue the experiment on higher education reform, and strive for a top-ranking State university and a famous world-class university.
Before the symposium, Secretary Wang visited the exhibition of SCUT science and technology achievements and Architectural Design Institute.
