On Jan 31 (the 28th day of the last month of the lunar year in China), 2011 Spring Festival sodalities for the staying students were held at SCUT.
At the party, the university leaders PENG Xinyi, ZHANG Zhen'gang and ZHU Min delivered their new year greetings to the students. President LI Yuanyuan sang with the teachers from School of Arts to give his best wishes and toasted with the students.
According to statistics, the students staying for Spring Festival amount to 1,000 or so. Among them, 300 are students from poverty-stricken families and nearly 200 international students. Besides, 60 professional rugby players sent by Shandong Sports Bureau joined in the sodality.
It is said that meals for students are free at the student canteens from lunar Dec. 30, 2010 to Jan. 3, 2011. Each needy undergraduate gets 200 yuan or meal ticket of the same worth. Before the winter vacation, Graduate School had provided 300,000 yuan's worth of subsidies for the needy students. Besides, SCUT would offer them with job positions to ensure their life "of plenty".
ATTIKE, a freshman from Ghana, said that people were everywhere during the Spring Festival in Guangzhou and that his Chinese friends all went back for family reunion, which was rare in Ghana. He thought it was very interesting to spend the Spring Festival in China.
A Tibetan girl, SI Langquzhen said that it was her second time to spend the Spring Festival in Guangzhou. For the reason of long distance and high expense, she has only been home once though she was already a junior. "We have a great time at this time every year," SI said with a smile. She danced Guozhuang, which is the most famous Tibetan folk dance, with her talented fellows at the sodality.
At noon that day, teachers and students sang the college anthem of SCUT. It was the first time for the college anthem to be sung publicly.
