HUST Students Awarded Imagine Cup China Championship

Write: Elinore [2011-05-20]

The intelligent public transportation system designed by four HUST students won the championship in Imagine Cup 2010 Software Design China Section in Hangzhou on April 28.

These four students will delegate mainland China to head for Poland's global finals this July. The competition is the world's premier student technology competition.

The students, namely, Yu Ting, Wang Chao, Lv Wen and Zhou Han, who are all HUST junior students, compose a team named GNG.

Yu Ting said, since 2009 they conducted investigations into three stake-holders involving passengers and departments related to traffic dispatching and traffic control. They used questionnaires and referred to references regarding public traffic situation in other cities and countries. They noted, many people are reluctant to take public transportation into account as their primary consideration because it is "crowded, unpunctual and inconvenient".

Therefore, they began to design a complex resolution integrating information technology, computer science, control and sensor technology. Through exact data collection and analysis system, a remote monitoring for public buses and traffic information is carried out. In addition, the end-users will act as individual's itinerary assistant, dealing with all itinerary details. The system is applicable to cities ranging from various scales.

Since its inception in 2003, the Imagine Cup has been in its eighth year.

The Chinese team has remained to be one of the best teams since taking part in 2004. It has won three first prize awards, eight second prize awards and eight third prize in the six years. Till now Chinese students have created up to 80,000 application software.
