The delegation had a workshop with experts
A Hubei delegation, headed by Pan Ligang, member of standing committee of Hubei provincial CPC, kicked off its global recruiting tour on April 22. HUST chairman Lu Gang acted as head of the US delegation from April 22 to 27.
The delegation met with overseas professionals, scholars and students exploring a broad range of issues on scientific and talents collaboration, and established connections with a batch of top-notch professionals and leading scholars through series of mini-seminars and via one-on-one appointment. The US delegation comprised Wuhan University, Hubei University, Wuhan Institute of Technology, Wuhan Textile University and East Lake High-tech Development Zone, etc.
During their stay in Washington on April 22-23, the delegates paid a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Zhang Yesui, the newly appointed ambassador to the US. At the residence of the Ambassador, Mr. Zhang Yesui together with the delegates met with Prof. Guohua Li, HUST alumnus and professor of Anesthesiology at Columbia University. The delegates also visited You Shaozhong, Minister Counselor of education section in the US, to have a better understanding of the characteristics of American education in the new era.
Dr. Lu visited Georgetown University and discussed issues related to Georgetown's experience in fostering leading figures in industry and business fields with Prof. James J. O'Donnell, Provost of Georgetown University and heads of the Office of International Programs and School of Continuing Studies. As a result of the consultation, HUST will send excellent students to Georgetown this summer vacation for program study credits mutual recognition , and carry out collaboration in city planning taking social demands into consideration.
The delegates also called at National Institutes of Health NIH , and exchanged views relating strengthening medical scientific cooperation with Dr. Roger I. Glass, director of Fogarty International Center.
On the morning of April 23, Dr. Lu met with Prof. Thomas, dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Wayne State University. The two had a thorough talk on enhancing collaboration in developing Confucius Institute. In the evening, Mr. Pan met with Prof. He Xi, HUST alumnus, Cheung Kong Scholar and Harvard professor.
Dr. Lu presided over the Hubei Provincial Overseas High Level Talents Recruiting Workshop in Boston on April 24. Mr. Pan introduced economic and social development in Hubei Province and the implementation of China's 'Thousand Talents Program' and Hubei's 'Hundred Talents Program'. Mr. Lu Guoxiang, minister of the Organization Department of Wuhan Municipal government delivered an introduction on economic progress in Wuhan and the development of East Lake National Independent Innovative Demonstration Zone, noting that the city will attract personnel by offering attractive remuneration package, engage talents with promising career prospect and retain talents through providing various services. Scholars and students present showed strong interest in Hubei and HUST. Meanwhile, the Boston Alumni Association played an important role in the success of the workshop.
During the workshop, dozens of doctor degree holders applied for positions at HUST, many of whom were from acclaimed American universities, or were doctors/ post-doctors with articles published on Science, Nature and Cell. In general, the applicants had better performance compared to last year.
After the workshop, a mini-seminar was held attended by well-known experts like Prof. Gang Chen, HUST alumnus, MIT professor, member of American National Academy of Engineering, Prof. Zhigang Suo, Harvard professor of School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, member of American National Academy of Engineering, and Prof. Frank Hu, Harvard professor of School of Public Health. Pan introduced China's progress and hoped they could contribute to China and Hubei Province in diverse ways.
On April 25, the delegation had talks with experts in the industrial field in New York. These experts were much concerned about Hubei, and expressed that they would return to China and start enterprises in China.
On April 26, the delegates explored a range of issues with senior research personnel in GE global R&D center and director of Department of Mechanic Engineering of University of Connecticut.
The delegates also visited Consulate General of PRC in New York and the Association of Hubei Fellow Provincials.
