A research has been conducted by the Gambella State Agriculture Research Center on 71 species of cotton which can be harvested by machineries and increase productivity.
Mr Belayneh Ayalew, Deputy Director of the research center stated in a press meet that survey on these imported species is still under process and the federal and Melkaworer agriculture research centers have also joined hands for examination purpose.
The need for recognizing cotton species that could be harvested by machine was felt because of excessive wastage of the crop caused by insufficient manpower in the state.
Experts have so far developed 25 species having the required attributes and the final selection will be made by the end of the budget year.
There has been a unanimous agreement on the issue that once these new species are adopted for cultivation, production is sure to rise from the current 25 quintals to 30 quintals per hectare.
