Recently, Mr Akber Sheikh, Chairman Media Committee of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) made an earnest request to Yousaf Raza Gillani, Prime Minister of Pakistan demanding implementation of quality cotton-seed supply to farmers for ensuring a good crop season this year.
This was one of the initiative entailed in the ‘100 day program’ initiated by the Government itself. Cottonseed supply has gone haywire with Government departments in a fix as to the application of bio-safety protocol and intellectual property rights.
In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Mr Akber Sheikh stated, “APTMA firmly hold that in order to compete in the textile trade, integration of supply chain is imperative. The organization is therefore working on backward linkages with the farmers and will undertake joint efforts in improving quality and quantity of cotton crops in Pakistan.”
APTMA did hold an interactive session with farmers representing the Farmers Associates Pakistan (FAP). Discussions largely revolved around cotton yield for the crop season 2008-09.
The meeting concluded that necessary input must be provided to the Government with regard to problems pertaining cotton cultivation. Farmers could thereafter lobby on various issues for ensuring a good harvest.
Concerns like availability of water in cotton producing areas for enhancing the yield by at least 15 percent and supply of quality seeds will be effectively taken into consideration.
Besides, pest control measures including timely dispatch of pesticide and dissemination of information on the agronomy of cotton seed will also be ensured.
