Fully synthetic nonwovens and meltblowns based on Celanex PBT in multi-layer filter media (composite filter papers) are providing enhanced reliability and help to protect modern automobile engines from organic and inorganic fuel contaminants.
They meet the automotive industry’s increased requirements for filter efficiency and service life. Choice of the right filter material plays an important role in ensuring the efficiency and reliability of combustion engines.
If contaminants such as corroded particles get into the fuel-injection system, there is a risk that the valves will be blocked. This leads to increased wear, higher fuel consumption and poorer engine performance. Nonwovens produced from polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) have very fine fiber structures (<1 µm) and excellent dimensional stability.
They offer a long service life and high resistance to today’s fuels, oils and other aggressive substances, even under high-temperature conditions. The advantages of PBT come into their own right from the filter production stage: very high flowability coupled with high melt strength, a wide processing window, and higher crystallinity than PET grades, which results in lower shrinkage.
Impressive filter performance
Meltblown nonwovens produced from Celanex are excellent for laminating to cellulose filter papers. They increase the durability and service life of the composite filter medium, for example in diesel filters. The meltblown PBT layer acts as a preliminary filter. The innovative filter fibers not only intercept contaminants but also assist water separation. In this way, water is almost entirely removed from the fuel and the highly sensitive fuel-injection system is effectively protected from corrosion and disturbances in the combustion process. The fuel supply is kept completely clean also thanks to Celanex PBT.
