Vice Minister Niu Dun Meets with Brazilian Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture

June 3-Vice Minister Niu Dun met with the visiting Brazilian Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mr. Gregolin, to exchange opinions on enhancing bilateral cooperation in fisheries.

According to Minister Gregolin, Brazil boasts rich fishery resources and favorable environment, which provides a good condition for the development of fisheries. However, at present the country's annual output of fishery products is only one million tons, with only seven kilograms of per capita output of aquatic products. With its growing economy and people's income, the consumption of aquatic products in Brazil will increase alongside. Therefore, it is urgently needed to boost the capacity of the country's fishery industry to meet the domestic demand. China is a major power of fisheries, with full-fledged technologies and successful experience. In particular, China has adopted a series of policies in recent years to promote the rapid development of fisheries, which can be drawn upon by Brazil. During his visit to China, Minister Gregolin hoped to establish connections with the Chinese side to strengthen bilateral cooperation in fishery technologies and investment.

Vice Minister Niu Dun introduced the development of China's fisheries, agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in fisheries and proposed the following suggestions: the two countries' fisheries agencies could sign cooperation MOU to establish cooperation mechanism and carry out cooperation in fisheries. Minister Gregolin appreciated the advices provided by Vice Minister Niu. The two sides agreed that relevant departments of the two countries should start drafting the cooperation MOU promptly as possible, enhance consultation, so as to reach agreement on the content of the MOU as soon as possible and sign the document through appropriate channels.
