The Ministry of Health recently announced that China had approved and issued 66 new national standards for dairy product safety, in complete conformity with international standards. According to Guangming Daily, it is undoubtedly a wise move to meet the consumer s increasing demand for food safety, and an effective measure to improve the safety of Chinese food for its better participation in the competition on the global market. However, a better-established standard is unlikely to comprehensively prevent the arising of issues concerning food safety. Previous experience has shown that oversight or inadequate efforts in standard implementation could also create an opportunity for substandard food to flow from the workshop to the table. Only with active and strict law enforcement and a deterring system of accountability can a good standard really play an effective role in safeguarding food safety.
