The city launched a pilot alert system that can automatically detect forest fires at Xishan Tree Farm in Haidian district Tuesday, the Beijing News reported.
The infrared thermal imaging system will monitor the area 24 hours a day with sensors that can detect a fire as small as 0.25 square meters from as far as a kilometer away.
The system could replace previous monitoring measures such as manned patrols and satellites. The system may be expanded to 400 other areas in the future.
