According to the Housing Planning for Main Urban Districts in Dongguan (2010 2012) (hereinafter referred to as the Planning)completed recently, Dongguan will build a total of 2,214 indemnificatory housing including 1,496 affordable houses and 718 low-rent houses in 2011. The government will also improve housing conditions of migrant workers via granting house rent subsidies, supporting them to buy or rent apartments, and developing public-rental housing.
The Planning shows that the total construction area of the low-rent homes for registered household in the city is about 110,000 square meters, which will benefit 1,564 families with 3,200 residents. 848 low-rent homes have been completed in 2010 and another 718 homes will be constructed this year.
The city government will also offer affordable homes to "sandwich" families, who do not qualify for low-cost and low-rent accommodation but cannot afford expensive commercial housing. In 2011, 1,496 affordable homes will be constructed in Dongguan, the average size of which is about 80 square meters.
The recipients for both low-rent homes and affordable homes are registered household in Dongguan. The city government will also make great efforts to improve the housing problem of residents including migrant workers through developing public rental housing this year and next year.
Statistics shows that currently there are about 230,000 rental rooms accounting for 6.06 million square meters in the main urban districts, which can meet the demand of migrant worker's living. According to the Planning, 1,600 public rental homes have been constructed in the city's main urban districts last year. For 2011 and 2012, the city plans to build another 2,400 public rental homes covering an area of 30,000 square meters in the main urban districts for migrant workers.
