Rush for free Thai visas

An increased number of Chinese tourists have been applying for free visas to Thailand recently, a result of the Thai embassy in Beijing's decision to reinstate the 230 yuan ($35) charge beginning next month, the Beijing Youth Daily reported Monday.

After the visa fee is reintroduced, travel costs are expected to increase around 10 percent, based on round-trip airfare from Beijing to Bangkok priced at about 3,000 to 5,000 yuan, Zhang Wencheng, an employee with the online travel agency yoee.com told the Global Times Monday.

As Thai visas remain valid for three months after they are issued and require around 10 days processing time, tourists have been racing to travel agencies to apply for the surcharge-free visas since March 15.
