Subway foreman dies

A foreman at a subway Line 6 construction site in Chaoyang district died Thursday after falling into a deep hole while trying to save one of his workers from slipping in, the Beijing News reported Saturday.

The worker, surnamed Chen, was pumping mud from the bottom of a narrow 19-meter-deep hole at the Hujialou site. Huang Zhiping, project manager at the subway construction site, was inspecting the area when he saw Chen in danger of falling and attempted to grab him.

The worker fell to the side while Huang slipped head first into the hole. Huang was hospitalized but later died.
