The National Museum of China east of Tiananmen Square opened its doors to individual visitors Thursday.

The institution underwent four years of renovations and reopened to group visitors on March 1 with "The Road to Rejuvenation," an exhibit charting China's rise to power from its imperial past.

The museum is issuing 1,000 free tickets daily between 9 am and 5 pm (closed Mondays) to visitors with proper ID or passport at the north entrance, while reserving another 2,000 tickets for group visits.

The only exhibit open to the public so far, "The Road to Rejuvenation" showcases the nation's rise by displaying over 2,100 items, from China's first TV to the space suit worn by Yang Liwei, the first Chinese to orbit the earth in 2003.
