A big case of medical devices smuggling which involves a value of RMB 130 million and an unpaid duty of RMB 23.91 million was broken recently, said the officers of Gongbei Customs District. A smuggling gang that had entrenched itself in the Pearl River Delta was smashed.
The anti-smuggling officers of Gongbei Customs District, acting on the clues they had collected before, carried out an operation on 6 January, 2009 in which 40 suspects and a batch of inward smuggling medical devices were seized. Officers also uncovered the particulars of the case after thorough investigation. During the period from May 2006 to January 2009, the gang, headed by Lu ( boss of a Hong Kong company) purchased free-tearing sheath, seal wire, BMW guide wire, needle arterial sheath, balloon, stitching instrument, guiding catheter, angiography catheter and other advanced medical devices from America and Germany, and then had the goods delivered to Macao. They then hired couriers or used the way of false declaration to smuggle the goods into mainland China. If success, the goods would be sold in various cities, such as Beijing, Nanning, Dalian, Changsha and Xuzhou.
Gongbei Customs District has finished the investigation of 9106 medical devices smuggling case under the supervision of the GACC. The 12 suspects have been transferred to the People s Procuratorate.
