SGMW to launch Baojun brand |
SAIC-GM Wuling (SGMW), GM s mini-commercial vehicle joint venture with SAIC and Wuling Motors, announced on July 18 in Shanghai that it is launching Baojun as a new passenger car brand.
Baojun, or treasured horse in Mandarin Chinese, represents the advent of a new era for SGMW as the carmaker begins to develop both passenger and commercial cars.
It aims to sell Baojun as a dependable car brand for smart and confident buyers, meaning it has the potential to quickly stake a claim to China s lucrative mid-range vehicle market.
Baojun is also expected to benefit from its unrestricted access to SGMW s vehicle sales and distribution network to drive sales.
As a leading mini-vehicle joint venture in the domestic market, SGMW can combine the best resources that SAIC, GM and Wuling have to offer, said Chen Hong, president of SAIC Group, at the conference.
Chen said SAIC is confident about the success of the new brand, which will offer consumers a higher-added-value passenger car.
Gan Wenwei, chairman and general manager of GM China, and Shen Yang, general manager of SGMW, attended the conference and also made speeches.
Gan said GM has always supported the development of localized passenger car projects, and it expects to see Baojun position itself as a reliable and affordable brand giving Chinese consumers international standards of quality.
SGMW plans to gradually expand the Baojun product line by adding one new model each year, along with new SUVs, MPVs and other passenger cars.
