Baosteel helps to set up Antarctic Inland Research Station

Write: Jelena [2011-05-20]

On Oct. 18th, at the berth dock of "Snow Dragon" researching vessel, Baosteel donated 4.5 million Yuan for the main construction material of first Antarctic Inland Research Station in China.

Heretofore, Baosteel has attended such donating activities for many times. During 2001 to 2002, Baosteel donated 1.5 million Yuan to Antarctic Great Wall Research Station for the build-up of one color coated building for scientific research. All the raw materials were made by Baosteel and this architecture was named as "Baosteel Building".

In the end of 2006, specialized technicians were dispatched by Baosteel to Antarctic Great Wall Researching Station to conduct a integrated maintenance for Baosteel Building. During 2007 to 2008, Baosteel participated in revamping project of Great Wall Station in "tenth five year" plan.

In 2007, approved by the State Council, we could initially build up Researching Station in Antarctic Inland. State Oceanic Administration entrusted Baosteel to take over this project, and the contract was initiated on Apr. 15th, 2008. The main construction of this project includes: living zone, researching zone, logistic zone, exploration zone, etc.

, with the total construction area of 558.56 square meters. The entire project is divided into two phases. The first phase is to establish the main building of 236 square meters, which shall be completed during Dec. 2008 and Jan. 2009. It is predicted that 110 ton steel structure, 140 ton stainless steel and 18 ton colored coated plate are needed.

At present, framework, room setting, interior decoration and integrated combination as well as packing and shipping are completed.

The peak ice fornix area A is recognized universally as the area with scientific significance, however, till now, no researching station has been established. The successful set-up of inland station has overcome tremendous difficulties: In terms of main construction, in order to gear to the extreme low temperature climate in Antarctic inland area, stainless steel is decided to be adopted resulting from the verification of relevant experts; In terms of material maintenance, Baosteel has dedicatedly developed fluorine-carbon color coated plate with two colors of flag yellow and flag red that is resistant to low temperature.

In order to resistant lower temperature, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is entrusted to conduct the laboratory experiment under-90 degrees for the decoration material used in the construction cabin. As for all 21 types of materials or components (mainly cables, appliance switch and lamps, cleaning device, etc), after turning back to the normal temperature from that experiment, all the performances and functions are under the normal condition.

Baosteel has conducted three times of pre-assembly activities, in order to ensure the successful inland installation; the pre-assembly work is conducted for stainless steel frame, construction cabin and inland researching station building. In order to ensure the success of the whole construction project and according to the deployment of State Oceanic Administration, all the erection technicians from Baosteel to inland have passed the strict training and screening by Tibet plateau training foundation.

On Oct. 20th, Baosteel erection staff and Antarctic researching members were expedited to the Antarctic peak to jointly take over the initial construction of the researching station.
