Startup of Phase II Project of Baosteel Majishan Port

On Oct. 27th, the sun was shining, the colorful flags were dancing and the happiness were flooding the atmosphere at Baosteel Majishan Port. At 12 o'clock at noon, General Manager of Baosteel Group, Mr. Ai Baojun, declared: the phase II project of the Majishan Port now come on stream. General Manager of Baosteel Co., Ltd., Mr.

Fu Zhongzhe, Deputy General Manager of Baosteel Co., General Manager of Baosteel Branches, Secretary of the Party Committee, Mr. Zhao Zhouli, the leaders from Ministry of Communication of PRC, Zhejiang Province and Shanghai Municipality, and the representatives of project engineering, construction, equipment manufacture and supervision, totally over 100 persons, attended the ceremony.

The second phase of the Majishan Port project was dubbed on Dec. 28th, 2005. The designed annual throughput of the project is 30million tons, including a 300,000-ton unloading berth, two loading berths that can accommodate 10,000-ton and 50,000-ton ships respectively, and a 0.32-square-kilometer ore yard built on polders as well as correlative incorporated production and living facilities.

CCCC Third Harbor Consultants Co., Ltd., CCCC First Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., Shanghai Baoye Construction Co., Ltd., DHI DCW Group Co., Ltd., and Liyungan Keyi Supervision Co., Ltd. has undertaken the design, construction, equipment manufacturer and supervision for this project respectively.

The project of Majishan Port, locating at the open-sea, is a typical open type deep-water port with deep water, turbulent flow, large tidal range, and much wind damage. The hydrographical and geologic conditions are more complex than that of phase I, so much more difficulties exist for construction. Furthermore, the amount of work has increased 50% while the project period is reduced by 50%.

As phase II project of Majishan port has taken the world advanced port as the model, it has built the production, construction and management integrative working system and set up the "coordination group for on-water production and construction safety" so as to push forward the project safely and orderly as scheduled.

Under the leading the project group, the design, construction, equipment manufacture and supervision companies cooperate closely. They adhere to the policy of "quality of construction engineering is the first", carefully organize, manage & construct, persist in the self-innovation and adopt the new process, technology & method, so they have complete the whole project only in 22 months, which has created the new record in Chinese harbor construction history.

Meanwhile, they have made their efforts to minimize the inter-influence between the production and construction, achieved the "no-delay" on either construction or production, which has not only enabled the excellent quality, but also created the 24th production record of accommodating "Bergstam" bulk-cargo which is of the largest tonnage capacity and largest net loading weight in the world.

The phase II project, which as already come on stream, boosts the Majishan port's annual handling capacity to 50 million tons and the port now ranks as the largest deepwater port for metal ore transferring in the world. Majishan port also became the first set of informatization, digital and intelligent port in China, as the "automatic control system for bulk stacking & reclaiming", which is self-developed by Baosteel Branch, Transportation Dept., has been put into operation.

At the ceremony, the project group of Baosteel Branch, Transportation Dept. has introduced the construction situation of phase II project of Majishan port, as well as the representatives of construction companies and the leaders of Zhoushan City & Shengsi County addressed to congratulate the startup of phase II project of Majishan port.

Mr. Fu Zhongzhe, on behalf of Baosteel, expressed his sincere appreciation to the state relative departments and various departments in Zhejiang Province who have cared and support the construction of phase II project for long term, as well as extended his best regards to all constructors and Baosteel's employees who have participated the construction.

He said, that the startup of Majishan phase II project would eventually expedite the steps of achieving Baosteel's new round of strategic target. He required that the port should strengthen the close cooperation with local government and society, sufficiently utilize the local abundant natural resources and achieve the superiorities complementation and synergic development.

Meanwhile, we should improve the management and operation of the port and maximize the production potential so as to build Majishan port into the world first-class famous port, provide strong support for Baosteel's new round of strategic development and make new & more contribution for accelerating the local economic development and the development of iron & steel industry in Yangtze River Delta Region.
