Ai Baojun Calls on the Staff to Build a First-class Green Steelmaker

Upon the coming of the yearly National Energy Conservation Promotion Week, the president of Baosteel Group Corporation Ai Baojun delivered a speech to call on the staff to carry out energy conservation, environmental protection and comprehensive utilization of resources in a good and down-to-earth way with the chance of promoting the integrated management and the target of "building a first class green steelmaker", so as to make due contributions to the national development of circular economy and the road of sustainable development.

In the outline of "11th 5-year" planning, the state puts forward the binding target of cutting down the energy consumption per RMB 10,000 yuan of national output value by 20% and reducing the total emission of pollutants by 10% by the end of "11th 5-year" period from that by the end of "10th 5-year" period for the first time.

As the second year in the state's "11th 5-year" planning, 2007 is a crucial year for realizing the binding target of energy saving and emission reduction. In the past two years, Baosteel kept increasing the inputs in R&D and technical revamping as always, striving to save the energy, lower the consumption and alleviate the environmental burden with technical innovation and management optimization, which is rewarded with favorable results.

In 2006, the total energy consumption of the iron & steel production of Baosteel Co., Ltd. is 15.965 million tons of standard coal and the comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel is 734 Kg standard coal, 2% down from that in 2005, the energy consumption per RMB 10,000 yuan of output value is down 11.

85% from that in 2005, among which, the comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel of Baosteel Branch is 686 Kg standard coal, continuing the leadership in the world. In May 2005, Baosteel Co., Ltd. became the first "National Environmental Friendly Enterprise" among the domestic steelmakers; in July 2006, Baosteel Co., Ltd. took the lead in issuing the sustainability report in domestic metallurgical industry.

Ai Baojun pointed out that, as a super large steelmaker in China, Baosteel shall recognize its mission and responsibility, actively respond to the state's call, take the lead in implementing various measures and regard the energy conservation and emission reduction as a vital task. During "11th 5-year" planning, Baosteel has already planned as a whole and deployed the work of energy conservation, environmental protection and comprehensive utilization of resources; Baosteel will strive to become a green steelmaker by 2010, the main indices of energy conservation and environmental protection will keep the first-rate level among the international comparable steelmakers, and will accomplish the task of energy conservation and emission reduction during "11th 5-year" period assigned by the national and local governments in an all-round way, i.

e. save the energy by 1,266,400 tons of standard coal and reduce the energy consumption per RMB 10,000 yuan of output value by 40% from that at the end of "10th 5-year"; build Baosteel into a resources recycling steelmaker by 2012, which means a circular type steelmaker with the functions of producing steel products with low consumption, converting the energy, disposing and recycling the bulk quantity of social wastes, and a national demo base for circular economy as well as a technical leader for the development of circular economy for steelmakers.
