Two years ago, high strength steel in Special Steel Branch was still a blank. After two years today, Special Steel Branch does not only possess over 30 kinds of new high strength steel products, but also occupy over 30% domestic market shares during this short period of time. High strength steel is special-purposed structural steel used in the field of air space, petrol-chemical and key projects, etc. In early 2004, Special Steel Branch aimed at high-end market and set up a high strength structural steel lab. Since its founding, R&D personnel have shouldered "dual" missions. On one hand, they look for new steel grades, and on the other hand, they open up new market. Research through "opening up" keeps research fruits up with the pace of the latest development of high strength steel and satisfies the up-to-date demands from customers. Not only over 30 new products developed during past two years have filled the blank of Special Steel Branch in the production of high strength steel but also over 80% of them are the ultra-high strength steel urgently needed in the national key projects. The key to the production of ultra-high strength steel with highly pure and highly uniform quality is to produce quality pure iron with low phosphorus and low sulfur. Before, Special Steel Branch has never produced high strength steel due to equipment constrains. To make a breakthrough in the existing process equipment limit, high strength steel R&D personnel made investigation into the production field and worked together with operators on formulating pilot production plan by using their existing professional knowledge and put forward process technology adapted to the practical condition. Production difficulties were tackled one by one and Special Steel Branch was able to set up its own high strength steel R&D production system. Some steel grades difficult to produce, highly risky and barely tackled by others have been produced early or late. When hearing the news that Special Steel Branch can produce high strength steel, GE America came specially to ask for pilot production of grade 3 gear steel.
