A foundation laying ceremony for the National Supercomputer Center in Changsha was held in the campus of Hunan University on Nov. 28.
The National Supercomputer Centre in Changsha is approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the third of its kind following the other two centers in Tianjin and Shenzhen.
Relying on the strong scientific strength of National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), the center will be equipped with the world's fastest supercomputer Tianhe-1A, with an overall expected capability of 1 quadrillion of computing operations per second.
With an investment of 720 million yuan from Hunan Province, the main equipments are scheduled to come into service by the third quarter of 2011 while the whole project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee Zhou Qiang declared the opening of the foundation laying ceremony.
Governor of Hunan Province Xu Shousheng addressed the occasion.
