A panel review meeting was held on February 22-23 to evaluate the development plan of Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology (TNList). The event was organized by the Basic Research Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
Tsinghua President Gu Binglin, who is also Chairman of the Board of TNList, delivered the welcoming remarks.
The panel is consisted of 15 experts, headed by Professor Jin Yilian, a fellow of Chinese Academy of Science. Also attending the meeting were ministers and chief officers of related divisions from MOST and Ministry of Education (MOE), representatives from all national laboratories, and university officials and department heads from Tsinghua.
TNList is one of the first five National Laboratories approved by MOST, receiving its distinction on November 25, 2003. Since then, Tsinghua has reorganized three State Key Labs and two MOE Key Labs in order to take full advantage of Tsinghua s academic excellence in four first-class subjects, namely, computer science and technology, electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, and control science and technology.
Tsinghua has been exploring various structural reforms to promote strategic and cutting-edge scientific innovation, and has pulled together a variety of resources to focus on the key directions. Key research emphases have been established, including a new generation of information network, broadband communication, intelligent information processing, and fundamental core devices. TNList is also pushing forward cross-disciplinary research such as bioinformatics and quantum information.
Chen Jinpei, Vice Minister of MOST and Zhao Qinping, Vice Minister of MOE gave speeches at the meeting on February 22. Gong Ke, Director of NTList reported on the preparation status and working plan. President Gu gave a presentation to state Tsinghua s position and role for NTList.
Officials and experts reviewed the lab s research work the same day. They also held a seminar with key TNList members on February 22.
