China s first boutique hotel with 11 houses and a clubhouse, each designed by a young Asian architect, will be officially opened for business on October 12th. The Commune by the Great Wall Hotel is a one-of-a-kind development project by SOHO China, a real estate company which has become a lifestyle brandname in China. It is known for its innovative design concepts in urban residential development and its unique ability to integrate contemporary art and architecture into living environment. The company s innovative and bold attempts were recognized by the La Biennale di Venezia this year. The special Prize to an individual patron of architectural works is awarded to Zhang Xin (CEO of SOHO China), whose bold personal initiative emphasizes the role of 11 Asian architects in building privately-owned houses in a definitively contemporary manner. It is the first time that La Biennale has awarded a prize to an individual who is not an architect/artist. It is also the first time an architectural work from China has been invited to attend La Biennale di Venezia.
"We had a vision in mind when we built the Commune," says Zhang Xin, "As developers we are aware that what we build today will set the landscape of Chinese architecture for the next 100 years. Our vision is to influence a whole generation of architects, developer, consumers in China."
SOHO China has chosen young Asian designers for the Commune project. "You have to realize that a lot of the construction in this century will happen in Asia, and particularly in China." says Zhang Xin, " We want to promote creativity and innovation and to set new standards." The site, tucked away in the valley 45 minutes north of Beijing, has 11 residences and club facilities. Architects were left free to develop modern living concepts and construction material, from hidden beds under the floor and bamboo sinks to adobe bricks.
As a luxury boutique hotel, the Commune is the first of its kind in China. Each house is furnished with designer furniture and an in- house service staff that is ready to provide highly individualized services to guests. Even before its opening, it has already become one of the most sought after venues for events and corporate conferences. Louis Vuitton recently hosted an evening at the Commune to celebrate its 10 year success in China.
The Grand Opening of the Commune is a celebration of Asian design. The ceremony will include the debut fashion show of Vivienne Tam, produced by iLook, a local Chinese fashion magazine. It is clear that the Commune is the most important landmark in Chinese architecture and urban development in the past 50 years. Its existence signals the beginning of a new era in Chinese lifestyle that will not only have a deep impact in China, but also in the whole world.
