Dalian Han Tomb Museum opened to the public yesterday with a collection of national-level cultural relics for the first time: the largest gold brick wooden outer coffin, the golden Ten-Dragon Buckle , a gilt bronze deer paperweight and golden horseshoes, etc. Dalian Party Secretary Xia Deren and Mayor Li Wancai unveiled a plaque for the museum. The municipal leaders Li Jingrui, Tian Shujun, Zhu Chengqing, and Shi Zhongyan; Guo Xingwen, director of the Culture Department of Liaoning Province, Wang Wei, director of the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and former leaders Bi Xizhen, Bian Guosheng, Yu Erming, Fang Jun, Wang Xizhi and Zheng Quanci, attended the opening ceremony.

Located in Shagang Village, Yingchengzi Neighborhood, Ganjingzi District, Dalian Han Tomb Museum is the first in China to display the ruins of Han Tombs, taking up an area of more than 4,600 square meters and a construction area of 2,600 square meters. There are sections for a ruins exhibition, cultural relics and temporary exhibitions as well as some office & service areas. The basic display is the Ancient Rhyme of the Han Dynasty Dalian Han Dynasty Burial Culture , with the theme of Dalian Han tombs, exhibiting Han tombs excavated for 7 years in Yingchengzi, through site restoration and the display of archaeological finds, revealing the characteristics of Dalian s political, economic and cultural development in West and East Han Dynasty and its close connection with the areas around Dalian. Owing to close contacts with the Central Plains, Dalian s politics, economy and culture developed unprecedentedly during the Han Dynasty, playing a prominent role in bridging the Central Plains and Northeast Asia. Since the 1930 s, a large number of Han tombs have been found in Dalian, of which the Yingchengzi tomb murals of the East Han Dynasty are famous and their wall painting Flying in the Sky has earned a place in the history of Chinese art. Since the 21st century, with economic development, a large number of Han tombs have been discovered one after another in Yingchengzi of Ganjingzi District, Dongjiagou of DDA and Zhangdian of Pulandian City, together with many unearthed precious cultural relics. So far, Dalian has conducted a rescue excavation of nearly 300 tombs and unearthed more than 3,000 cultural relics, becoming the richest area with the most widely distributed sites and archaeological finds and demonstrating once again Dalian s long and splendid history and culture.

The construction project of the Dalian Han Tomb Museum was listed respectively as one of the things the Dalian Municipal Government did for people in 2007 and 2008, and was one of the key constructions of public cultural facilities the government promoted in 2009. The completion of the museum will be of great importance to the publicity of Dalian s long history and culture as well as the search for the city s roots.

Vice Mayor Zhu Chengqing said at the opening ceremony that Dalian Han Tomb Museum is a landmark project of Dalian s cultural development and cultural heritage protection. The completion and opening of the museum is a great event in the field of culture and is of great significance in publicizing, educating and studying Dalian s history and culture as well as in building Dalian into a famous cultural city. Zhu expects that the museum will attract more people for visits with the principle close to reality, close to life and close to the demands of the masses and make the museum a vivid resource for citizens to understand and to be familiar with the history of their own city. They will play a role in academic study to make their contribution to improving people s cultural quality, to building a famous cultural city and to enhancing Dalian s influence; they will learn from advanced experience in construction and management of the museum to create a new image of the museum and to promote a healthy and orderly development of Dalian s cultural relics and museum cause. Dalian is now in a critical period of accelerating macro-urbanization and realizing the new strategic development leap forward, therefore people on the cultural front should treasure their duties and opportunities greatly and redouble their efforts to provide the people of Dalian with more and better cultural feasts and to make a great contribution to Dalian s economy, society and the new strategic development leap forward.

In addition to the museum opening, the Han Dynasty An Art Exhibition of Stone Relief of the Han dynasty , co-organized by the Dalian Municipal Culture Bureau and the Xuzhou Cultural Relics Bureau, was held at the museum. Stone relief of the Han dynasty is a unique historical form of art; the artists drew on stones, combining realism with romanticism, which played a transitional role in the history of Chinese art. Last night, Jiangsu Provincial Liuqin Opera was invited to give a large concert in imitation of the Han Dynasty style: Han music-Ode to Peace at the Dalian People s Culture Club.
