On the afternoon of 16th December, HZU held a meeting on International education in Meeting Room 202 of the Administration Building. President Yang Haitao and other leaders, principals of every unit and delegates of foreign teachers and students attended the meeting.
First, President Yang summarized the results of our internationalization efforts in higher education since 2009. Then, each participant was invited to express their own opinions and put forward some feasible suggestions on common issues and concerns. Suggestions included:
1)how to effectively manage the foreign teachers; 2) promotions of bilingual lessons and language and culture skill building; 3) HZU cooperation on international scientific research with foreign universities;and, 4) the continuing organization of faculty and staff training abroad.
Dr. Lynn Ogden and student Gou, Hua, one of HZU s first exchange students, gave speeches respectively. Dr. Lynn Ogden talked about westerners perspectives of China Higher Education Internationalization and its situation in Huizhou University. He also shared opinions and gave advice and suggestions on how to continue to deepen our international education. Student, Gu, Hua gave a report on his study, living and work life in America, and expressed his heartfelt thanks to University for the honor of representing HZU abroad.
President Yang, Haitao expressed his deep appreciation for the results to date of our international education efforts.He put forward eight key points on this issue as HZU looks to the future:
1.We must keep a firm belief in the concept of international education, and promote practical development of internationalization;
2.We must have two important aims in mind at all times: quantity and quality, such as: increase the proportion of foreign teachers and bilingual courses in all departments; increase the number of exchange students travelling to and from HZU; increase the number of international workshops; and, we must develop an English language University Journal that reaches out to the international community both in China and abroad.
3.We must hire more foreign teachers with better and better academic and experiential qualifications to improve our quality and service to our student body;
4.We must take care of foreign teachers in their work and daily life and cultivate their sense of belonging;
5.We must start to encourage and support more HZU recent graduates who want to study abroad
6.We must deepen and extend some current programs with unique characteristics that contribute to our internationalization efforts ;
7.We must intensify both the number and quality of our scientific research missions and get more results;
8.We must create an atmosphere of mutual respect and harmony in all aspects of our international education on campus.
