The preliminary of 9th "Chinese Bridge", for students of universities and secondary schools, enjoyed a complete success in University of Canterbury UC on May 8th.
This competition is planned by New Zealand Division Committee of the Education Office of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Zealand, and hosted by the Confucius Institute in cooperation with HUST and its sister university UC. It is honorable to have the ambassador, Zhang Limin, and the first secretary, Wang Shenggang, to attend the Ceremony. The dean of the Confucius Institute, Doc. Lin Yong, presided over the award ceremony.
There are 34 students, from University of Canterbury, University of Otago UO , Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology and other universities in South Island, coming for this competition. In the competition, students are divided into three groups, the university group, high school and the middle school group, with respective topics, like "China and I", "My Dream" and "My Story". And, they demonstrated their genius, in the competition, about learning and practicing Chinese.
For example, Anthony Costello, a student from UO, attracted by Chinese and its culture since his four-month study in China, sang a Chinese song, "Tong Hua Fairy Tales ", which won him waves of applause. Another student, Angelina, from Lincoln Senior High School, expressed her love for Chinese culture with her fluent Chinese, willing to contribute her life in Chinese education like the teachers present. And the students from middle school group did an excellent performance in their speech by means of physical posture, picture and real object.
Finally, the seven winners, on behalf of South Island, of this competition will take part in the New Zealand Final of "Chinese Bridge" in Wellington on May 29th.
