The delegation headed by HUST executive vice president Lin Pinghua visited Arizona State University ASU and California State University, Chico CSUC . Prof. Lin signed agreement of 3+2 program with the two universities, attended ASU 2010 Convocation, visited alumni and some of the faculties and laboratories. They also had an in-depth discussion in terms of further collaborations with the two universities.
The delegation met with Kathleen Fairfax, vice provost for Global Education Services, on May 13. Since signing the bilateral agreement with ASU in 2005, HUST has sent three groups of excellent undergraduates totaling 66 to ASU School of Engineering. This year 32 students graduated successfully, some of whom will stay at ASU or go to Stanford and other acclaimed universities for further study. Lin believed, the program is a success and students exchanges set up the bridge for collaboration between the two universities. The exchanges will be expanded beyond engineering to other disciplines so as to boost the collaborative program and foster increasing talents with international competitiveness, Lin added.
Lin and HUST Academic Affairs Office director Xu Xiaodong attended ASU 2010 Convocation, conferred degrees on HUST students and extended congratulations to the teachers and students present.
On May 14-15, the delegation visited ASU Decision Theatre and discussed on detailed collaboration between ASU and HUST College of Public Administration. The delegation also visited ASU School of Engineering, Bio-design Institute, Skysong Industrial Incubation Center, etc.
On May 17th, the delegation had a meeting with Willie Hopkins, dean of School of Business, CSUC. HUST has selected 22 outstanding undergraduates from management and economics fields to study at CSUC School of Business in 3 years.
Paul Zingg, President of CSUC met with the delegation on May 18. Sandre Flake, provost and vice president of CSUC signed a collaborative agreement with Lin. Lin also visited College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management, and discussed on how to expand cooperative channels.
On the workshop with HUST exchange students, the students acknowledged HUST provided such a good chance for students to study abroad, and believed that they built their independent living abilities, improved initiative on study, and strengthened their sense of national pride and social responsibilities. The students hoped more opportunities could be offered in HUST. Lin encouraged students to cherish the study chance and let excellence become a habit.
